History of the Jägerhöhe War Cemetery in Węgorzewo
The Jägerhöhe War Cemetery was established in 1917 on a moraine hill called Saxon Hill. It is situated about 18 m above the surface of Lake Święcajty and was created as a burial place for soldiers who died during World War I. The necropolis takes the shape of a horseshoe and is surrounded by a wall made of boulders, which adds to its unique character. In the center stands a 15 m high wooden cross, funded by the Lehndorff family, former owners of Sztynort.
The cemetery is the resting place of 344 German and 234 Russian soldiers, buried according to German tradition, in which fallen soldiers were laid to rest where they died – hence the multinational character of the necropolis. The cemetery is surrounded by stone circles known as “circles of heroes” and a pine forest, creating a symbolic setting.
After World War II, the site gradually fell into obscurity, but since 1983 it has been under conservation protection. Restoration works began in 1989, thanks to which the cemetery regained its interwar appearance and today serves as a valuable testimony to the region's history.
